Ray was introduced to prescribed fire in 1990 on the North Face of the Selway River in Idaho while working on a research project investigating the effects of fire on elk winter range. He received formal fire training in 1994 while burning in Indiana. In 1999, Ray joined The Nature Conservancy in Oregon where he began writing prescribed fire burn unit and fire management plans.
In 2007 he moved to Texas and led The Nature Conservancy's Refugio-Goliad Prairie Prescribed Fire Project for 5 years. In 2012, Ray moved to Washington State where he assisted development of a prescribed fire program for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife burning in the dry forests on the east slopes of the Cascade Mountains. His home is in North Central Washington and he travels throughout the US to work with clients.
Smoked Goose Consulting, LLC was founded in 2015 by Ray Guse, a nationally certified Prescribed Fire Burn Boss with experience across the US. For more than 15 years Ray has honed skills in all aspects of fire management. Smoked Goose Consulting, LLC is licensed in Washington State and registered with the Small Business Administration to contract with state and federal agencies. Smoked Goose caters to the prescribed fire planning and implementation needs of private landowners and non-profit organizations. We are insured for general, professional and pollutants (smoke) and conduct fire management business throughout the United States.
